Taygeta Beta
Number 1/8 Bronze is available immediately
Taygeta Beta is a bronze sculpture, about 1.6m high, weight 150Kg, based on a Terra-cotta sculpture of the same name produced around 2008. It has a green and gold patina together with various hues especially designed for outdoor installation.
The Greek Goddess Taygete whose name means “long-necked” was one of the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. The daughters (Taygete, Maia, Celaeno, Alcyone, Electra, Sterope and Merope) are mountain nymphs, known collectively as the Pleiades(just like the star cluster).
In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the seven daughters of the Titan Atlas. Atlas was forced to hold up the sky for eternity and was therefore unable to protect his daughters. Legends say that Zeus turned the seven sisters into a constellation cluster to protect them from the advances of Orion, the hunter. One of the stars is Taygeta. Mount Taygetos in Laconia, Greece, derived its name from her.
